Computer Vision Engineer

Orsi Academy is a unique centre for surgical innovation and expertise in minimal invasive (robotic) surgery, specialized in the development, operation and commercialization of practical trainings, congresses, publications and courses for a target group of beginner and/or advanced surgeons, healthcare professionals, the medical devices industry, academics and/or other interested parties. Orsi Academy is based in Melle (near Ghent), Belgium. 40+ enthusiastic, international professionals are directly involved, of which Orsi Academy employs 15 people.

Job objectives

Surgical robotic procedures are becoming the standard of care for many surgical procedures. Surgeons need to be trained in an objective manner as to facilitate this massive switch towards robotic surgery.

As Europe’s largest training centre for robotic surgery, Orsi is at the forefront of developing curricula to develop these very sought after surgical skills.

We use computer vision techniques to derive meaningful metrics from surgical videos, both in real operating theatres as well as at our centre in Melle. We are currently looking for a junior profile to help us in expanding these efforts and assist surgeons for the better. We develop smart algorithms which analyse surgical videos as well as CT/MRI data to better guide surgery. As a training centre, we also possess some of the largest datasets available.

Result areas/tasks

The Computer Vision Engineer is responsible for:

  • Applying fundamental computer and machine learning techniques to surgical videos together with our surgical AI lead

  • Following up on scientific literature, willing to stay ahead of the field

  • Pushing the technical part of our automated detection systems to the next level by application of new techniques

  • Helping in the writing technical parts in scientific papers, in close collaboration with clinicians and our surgical AI lead

  • Data preparation and processing, together with our surgical AI lead

  • On-edge deployment of the developed frameworks for surgical vision

Relevant education, knowledge and experience

For this interesting and challenging position we are in search of a candidate with:

  • Master of Science in informatics, computer science, engineering physics, biomedical engineering or electrotechnical engineering
  • Familiarity with machine/deep learning frameworks (Keras or PyTorch) and libraries (scikit-learn)
  • Practical knowledge of deep learning computer vision algorithms
  • Practical knowledge of Git
  • Teamplayer
  • Good communication skills, both written & verbal, technical and non-technical
  • Passion for healthcare and more specifically Surgical Data Science
  • Excellent spoken, written and read English, French is a plus
  • Willingness to develop specific technical skills and knowledge when required
  • Lifelong learning mentality: staying informed of state-of-the-art technical developments and trends in areas of technical expertise
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Proven critical thinking and ability to solve routine technical problems in a systematic way through design, testing and analysis
  • Creative and innovative mindset
  • Nice to haves include:
    • Experience developing in cloud-based applications (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure)
    • Knowledge of automated segmentation algorithms in CT/MRI
    • Knowledge of 3D visualization and manipulation (Netfabb, Autodesk, …)

The ideal candidate is proactive, eager to learn, and looking for a technical deep dive into surgical vision. He/she has a hands-on mentality and a practical background in computer-vision techniques and follows the latest trends in the field.
